Botanical name: The Latin name of Daphne is Laurus nobilis.
The laurel is an aromatic plant of the Daphne family, Lauraceae. It is a tree native to Asia & the Mediterranean countries. An ancient Greek myth says that Daphne was a beautiful nymph who blinded Apollo with passion and was transformed into a tree so as not to succumb to his passion.
When Apollo found out that his beloved had become a tree, he cut down a few branches and made a wreath in her memory. He made the laurel a sacred plant and established it as a prize for champions.
The flowering period is March and April. For therapeutic purposes we use the fruits and leaves.
Extraction Methods
Distillation is a delicate process requiring experience and constant supervision in order to obtain a high-quality oil. Our chemists and perfumers undertake this delicate process to obtain high quality essential oils. During the steam distillation process, steam passes through the plant material. The combination of heated steam and gentle pressure causes the essential oil to be released from microscopic protective sacs flooding the air with the most beautiful and exquisite natural scents.
Our equipment ensures the best quality of essential oil. It takes 100 kg of herbs to make 1 lt of essential oil. We produce Dittany essential oil in a worldwide exclusivity, as well as a wide range of rare essential oils from flowers and herbs in our distillery in Agios Nikolaos, Crete. An “essencier” or separator collects the floral water or hydrosol and the essential oil. The difference in density between the two liquids makes it easy to separate the essential oil from the floral water.
Properties
Laurel essential oil gives off a deliciously sensual, delicate, flower-fruity scent. The leaves are rich in essential oils containing 45% cineole, a bitter substance and tannin. The high percentage of cineole it contains, justifies its action on the body's chemical mechanisms that affect memory and enhance clarity.
In addition, it has antiviral, antimicrobial, mucolytic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties.
It is ideal for the scalp and helps tackle oiliness in hair.
Dioskouridis mentions that the leaves of the laurel are warming and soothing and that the dried leaves have a stronger aroma than the fresh ones.
It is recommended for rheumatoid arthritis, arthritis, indigestion and aerophagia.

It has excellent anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and diuretic properties. Its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties are comparable to morphine and piroxicam. Laurel essential oil can alleviate emotional and physical pain associated with muscular and joint problems due to gout, arthritis, or rheumatism. Safe to use in cooking too. Pure essential oils are very concentrated, and therefore should be used in small amounts and never ingested undiluted or directly from the bottle.
