Botanical name: Origanum Vulgaris
Oregano is one of the most important aromatic herbal plants in Greece. In addition to the characteristic aroma and taste it gives to food, it also has many medicinal properties, with the main active ingredient being carvacrol.
Its name comes from the words "Oros" (mountain) and "ganos" (splendor), meaning the plant that brightens the mountain. Greek oregano essential oil has excellent quality and is considered one of the best in the world. Greece's mild Mediterranean climate and soil quality contribute to this.
Extraction Method
Oregano essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the shoots, leaves and flowers of the plant. Distillation is a delicate process requiring experience and constant supervision in order to obtain a high-quality oil. Our chemists and perfumers undertake this delicate process to obtain high quality essential oils. During the steam distillation process, steam passes through the plant material. The combination of heated steam and gentle pressure causes the essential oil to be released from microscopic protective sacs flooding the air with the most beautiful and exquisite natural scents.
Our equipment ensures the best quality of essential oil. It takes 100 kg of herbs to make 1 lt of essential oil. We produce Dittany essential oil in a worldwide exclusivity, as well as a wide range of rare essential oils from flowers and herbs in our distillery in Agios Nikolaos, Crete. An “essencier” or separator collects the floral water or hydrosol and the essential oil. The difference in density between the two liquids makes it easy to separate the essential oil from the floral water.
Properties
The ancient Greeks knew its therapeutic value and used it by drinking its herbal tea for colic pain as well as to tackle external swelling and sore throat.
The father of medicine Hippocrates used oregano to treat gastric pain and various respiratory diseases as mentioned by Theophrastus in his book "On Plant Stories" and by Dioscoridis Anazarveas in his famous work "On Plant Medicine". Antigonus Karystios mentions that the Pelasgians healed their wounds by putting oregano on them.
The main ingredients of oregano essential oil are thymol and carvacrol (47-68%).
Carvacrol is what gives the characteristic aroma of oregano. These two phenols, carvacrol and thymol, are also responsible for the antioxidant, analgesic, antiseptic, tonic and anti-inflammatory properties of oregano.
Carvacol could potentially be used as a food disinfectant, as well as surfactants, in combination with other antimicrobials.
One of the most powerful essential oils for a healthy digestive system as it increases bile flow and kills the pathogenic gut bacteria that live in the digestive system.
In addition, oregano oil inhibits the growth of yeast, including candida albicans, which can cause vaginitis or oral infections.
Other compounds contained in smaller amounts, such as p-cumin, contribute to the antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of oregano.
