Botanical name: Thymus Capitatus.
Thyme is one of the most famous Mediterranean, aromatic and beekeeping herbal plants. Its name was first given by the ancient Greeks and comes from the ancient Greek verb "Thio" which means "I sacrifice".
The ancient Greeks used it as an incense in temples. Another theory states that it comes from the word Thymon which means brave. Roman soldiers used it to gain strength and energy.
It is collected during the flowering period, in late spring to early summer and is considered an ideal herbal plant for beekeeping, because it helps produce an extremely aromatic honey with great nutritional value.
Extraction Method
Thyme essential oil comes from steam distillation of its leaves and flowers and has a strong characteristic aroma.
Distillation is a delicate process requiring experience and constant supervision in order to obtain a high-quality oil. Our chemists and perfumers undertake this delicate process to obtain high quality essential oils. During the steam distillation process, steam passes through the plant material. The combination of heated steam and gentle pressure causes the essential oil to be released from microscopic protective sacs flooding the air with the most beautiful and exquisite natural scents.
Our equipment ensures the best quality of essential oil. It takes 100 kg of herbs to make 1 lt of essential oil. We produce Dittany essential oil in a worldwide exclusivity, as well as a wide range of rare essential oils from flowers and herbs in our distillery in Agios Nikolaos, Crete. An “essencier” or separator collects the floral water or hydrosol and the essential oil. The difference in density between the two liquids makes it easy to separate the essential oil from the floral water.
Properties
Thyme essentail oil contains thymol (percentages over 25%) as its main ingredient, known for its excellent antiseptic action. Thymol is also responsible for the aroma of thyme. It is no coincidence that it was a natural forerunner of modern antibiotics.
